

nervesThoughts of torment flooded my mind as I sat on a giant rock waiting for mynerves
school bus to arrive. I stared at my shoes as my peers arrived at the bus stop. To me no
eye contact was the best way to go. It was my first day back after a week of hiding at
home from the terrors that awaited me. It was a state I had grown comfortable with in my
sixteen years, a modern day Boo Radley. Before the bus arrived I contemplated running
home and pulling off an Academy Award winning performance that justified my faux
illness, to stay home just one more day. Or mayb

night’s rain. I lay in my bed awaiting the morning staring at the green plastic alarm clock that read 4:21 in bright red numbers. “How long is it until the sun comes up?” I
thought to myself. I was afraid of the hours when everyone should be asleep. I was not
afraid of the dark, but instead afraid of the night, the time that felt lonely. It was the time that I feared that during the night my family was taken by unknown people, or maybe
their bodies still lay in their beds, but their brains were taken by aliens. I
